The Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) and (China) have signed a new framework agreement for collaboration that consolidates and expands their already close academic, scientific and cultural relationship. The agreement was signed at the Xueyuan Road campus of Beihang University, as part of the 'UPV Day' celebration, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Spain.
The Rector of the UPV, José E. Capilla, and his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yunpeng, signed the agreement, which marks a new stage in cooperation between the two institutions, focused on promoting joint research projects, academic and student mobility programmes and joint academic training in strategic areas such as engineering, technology and applied sciences. All this, with a view to training talent with a global and interdisciplinary vision.
During the ceremony, Rector Capilla expressed his satisfaction with the sustained growth of the relationship between both universities, emphasising that 'we continue to take firm steps to strengthen ties with Beihang University and establish a UPV campus at this centre, which would make the UPV the first university in Spain to achieve this important milestone’.
This objective, part of a global growth project led by the Vice-Rector for Internationalisation and Communication, José F. Monserrat, represents a shared vision of the future to project the UPV's teaching and research in an international environment of excellence.
The project is progressing strongly. During this visit, agreements have been signed and relevant high-level meetings have been held with the administrations involved, especially with those responsible for internationalisation at the Ministry of Education,’ said José E. Capilla.
Meanwhile, Wang Yunpeng pointed out that the cooperation between Beihang University and the Universitat Politècnica de València is part of a shared vision to strengthen cooperation in higher education between China and Spain.
Beihang University, recognised as a world leader in the field of aeronautics, where it ranks first in the prestigious Shanghai Ranking, is a first-rate strategic partner for the UPV. Both institutions share a solid foundation of historical collaboration, with multiple student and teacher exchanges, as well as successful experiences in joint academic programmes.
Beihang University is a prestigious higher education institution with a long history. Founded on 25 October 1952 as the Beijing Institute of Aeronautics, it was formed from the merger of the aeronautics departments of the Beijing Institute of Technology, Tsinghua University and Sichuan University. In 1988, it was renamed Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. In 2002, it changed its English name to Beihang University.
Beihang University is currently under the administration of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. It has campuses on Xueyuan Road and Shahe in Beijing, as well as a newly opened International Campus in Hangzhou, with a total area of approximately 4,000 square metres.
Beihang University and the Universitat Politècnica de València (Spain) signed an inter-university agreement in 2007 to establish university-level collaboration. Over the last decade, both institutions have maintained constant communication, sending almost 100 exchange students. 2025 marks the 20th anniversary of establishing a comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Spain.
In January, representatives from the Universitat Politècnica de València visited the Hangzhou International Campus of Beihang University. Subsequently, in April, twelve professors from Beihang visited the UPV. They held in-depth discussions on talent training and scientific research cooperation in related disciplines such as communications, computer science and machinery.
This month, more than a dozen students from the UPV will travel to the Hangzhou International Campus of Beihang University to participate in the Beihang 2025 International Summer School.
